Central Theme: Broadening the Curriculum
Almost 120 of DIT’s academics gathered on Wednesday January 11th 2012, in Cathal Brugha St. to attend the 12th Annual Showcase of Learning and Teaching Innovations organised by the Learning, Teaching and Technology Centre, and Staff Training and Development.
The central theme this year was “Broadening the Curriculum” and, following a wide variety of presentations, workshops, and moderated poster sessions detailing a wealth of innovative projects happening around the institute, a 15 minute voxpop clip of DIT colleagues giving their thoughts on what broadening the curriculum meant to them sparked a valuable discussion on how DIT might approach this challenge.
The keynote presentation was given by Dr. Kelly Coate. Kelly is the Vice Dean (Graduate Studies) in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies NUI Galway, as well as lecturing in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching there. Her presentation was entitled “The Curriculum and the Limits of Imagination” and challenged the attendees to consider what the concept of ‘curriculum’ actually means, what its purpose is, and how it should be shaped (and by whom) before deciding whether it is ‘fit-for-purpose’ in the 21st Century. A video of Kelly's keynote can be viewed below.
The feedback shows that the attendees found the day to be valuable and very thought provoking experience. Comments made included:
