"Is it on the exam?" Practical tips for changing assessment practices


Effective assessment not only allows us to gauge progress, but also enables studnets to restructure their understanding/skills, and facilitates more effective learning strategies. This session will address some principles of good assessment practice, and provide practical advice on implementing good practice strategies related to these principles.

Key areas of focus will include:

  • Assessment for learning - what skills do we wish students to develop?
  • Constructive alignment - matching assessment to learning outcomes
  • Alternatives to the terminal exam
  • Providing feedback - challenges and solutions
  • The potential for peer and self assessment mechanisms
  • Putting it into practice - procedures for changing your assessment strategy
