Lecture Capture with Echo360: What it is and how to do it

Lecture capture is an umbrella term describing any technology that allows lecturers to record what happens in their classrooms and make it available digitally.

Echo 360 is a lecture capture software system which is now available on a pilot basis in DIT. The trial will be available on some podium PCs and from local technicians.

Echo360 can be used to record your lecture and/or slide shows. The system captures the lecture by recording audio, screen activity and video. These elements are then synchronised, published and a link of the multimedia presentation posted to your webcourses module or preferred website. Students can then review the presentation streamed from a media server which ensures fast playback whether they are on or off-campus.

Some of the benefits of lecture capture are:

  • Students can access their lectures online
  • Reduced need for note taking
  • Students can replay and navigate within lectures for revision and increased comprehension
  • Lecture capture can help to build an archive of previous lectures within a module
  • Blended approaches can use lecture capture to save contact time by delivering parts of the module material online
  • Captured lectures can be re-used by moving or copying them amongst webcourses modules.
  • Lectures may also be automatically delivered for podcast (mp3) and video(m4v) for playback on mobile devices.
